ATTRACT Call statistics: 1,211 breakthrough projects apply for funding

The ATTRACT Call was a success! A total of 1,211 breakthrough projects in detection and imaging technologies were submitted from over 40 countries around the world. Of these, 170 projects will be awarded €100,000 each in seed funding to bring their ideas to life.

As for the fields represented by the submissions, 58% of the 1,211 breakthrough ideas are related to sensors, 20% to data acquisition systems and computing, 17% to software and integration, and 5% to front and back-end electronics.

Most of the projects were presented by universities or small and medium-sized enterprises, accounting for 35% and 20% of the total submissions, respectively. Other types of organisations applying for funding included research technology organisations (18%), research institutes (14%), start-ups (6%) and large corporations (3%).

Top 10 countries competing for funding

Out of the 1,211 proposals submitted, Italy heads the list of countries with the most submissions (261). In other words, 22% of the disruptive ideas submitted from around the world were from Italian organisations.

The second country with the highest number of submissions was Spain (230), followed by Switzerland (108), France (96), the United Kingdom (81), Germany (67), Finland (65), the Netherlands (59), Portugal (33) and Israel (32).

Evaluation period

An independent R&D&I committee of top-level experts in the domain of detector and imaging technology for science, industry and the private investor community is now entering the proposal evaluation period.

The experts will have until March 2019 to select the highly innovative projects that hold the most promise for science and society.

Only 14% of the 1,211 research projects submitted will be granted €100,000 each in seed funding to bring their ideas to life.
