Andrew McCarthy is a team leader at the EMBL Grenoble Outstation since 2007 and a member of the ATTRACT PCB since 2016. He has more than 25 years’ experience in structural biology and co-authored over 56 publications. He is an expert in X-ray diffraction techniques, but also uses electron and light microscopy imaging technologies to better understand biological questions. His team is dedicated to the further development of X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques, and they significantly contribute to the design and operation of several structural biology beamlines at the ESRF.
He was also a member of Alkion Biopharama scientific advisory board that was recently acquired by Evonik. The EMBL has significant experience in developing innovative X-ray diffraction and imaging instruments, as well as the methods and analyses algorithms need to process this data for biological applications. He hopes this experience, when coupled with the ATTRACT initiative, can be used to create the next generation of imaging technologies needed to address the ever growing need of the biological community.
